| Humpback Whale Watchers |
The Humpback Whales of the Northern Pacific spend their winters in Hawaii. They migrate from the colder waters of Alaska to the warmer waters near and around the Hawaiian Island chain. While here, they have their young and care for them until they are strong enough to make the long trip back to Alaska for the summer. A slow moving whale measuring up to 50 feet long and swims at only 2-5 miles per hour with a top speed of 9 miles per hour when pursued. In spite of its slowness, the humpback is considered the most athletic of whales breaching high into the air and crashing on its back into the water. The humback whale is an endangered species: it survives in 3 populations- in the North Atlantic, the North Pacific and the southern hemishpere.
